Green Schools Scoileanna Glasa
A Green Schools Committee has been established in Emo NS, made up of pupils from all classes. This committee plays an active role in promoting biodiversity within the school and gathers suggestions from classmates on ways to further improve and protect our school environment.
Emo NS is currently working towards achieving its Green Schools Flag in Biodiversity. As part of this initiative, pupils have already completed a biodiversity survey, and each class has engaged in lessons focused on biodiversity awareness and protection.
There has been a noticeable increase in the bird population around the school due to the number of bird feeders that we now have in place. The planters at the front of the school have also enhanced the environment, adding colour and promoting plant diversity. In addition, composting bins are now in use, helping to reduce the amount of organic waste going into our rubbish bins.
Last year, the school also reintroduced hens to the school grounds. We now have two laying hens that provide fresh eggs, which are used in our school for cooking/baking activities with the children. A school-wide competition was held to name the hens, with the winning entries being Cluck Norris, named by Patrick Lawlor (6th Class), and Barbara, named by Juliette Finane (5th Class).
